We now proudly offer data recovery services, right here in Vancouver, British Columbia (BC), Canada. That means you don't have to ship your hard drive off to Ontario or the USA, and our turnaround times are quite often measured in hours rather than days or weeks. What you should do: If you're having hard drive problems or you've accidentally deleted something, do not touch your computer. Call us at 604-249-4486. This is what we'll tell you to do: Hard Drive Failure If your computer won't start:
If your computer is still running:
After that, you can either remove your hard drive yourself, put it in an anti-static bag, and bring it in to us in Vancouver, or you can give us a call and we'll come out to you, usually within a few hours, and take care of everything. Please note that on-site visits are always charged an hourly rate of $80 / hr within Greater Vancouver in addition to the data recovery costs (if any). Deleted or Missing Files If you've deleted a file, and it's not in the recycle bin, then UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER right away and give us a call. We often see this problem with memory cards for cameras. (You took a bunch of pictures and when you go to transfer them to your computer, they're not there.) If the files are missing from your camera, then turn off your camera and remove the memory card. DO NOT take any more pictures, or save any files (you may save open files to a memory key or floppy disk (NOT a CD), if necessary). Usually when you delete a file the data is still on your hard drive, it has just told the file system that it no longer exists. What this means is that, if you don't save anything else on your computer, then the file will still be there and can easily be recovered with the use of our special data recovery software. If you continue to use your computer, save any documents on your computer, or take any pictures with your digital camera, you may permanently lose your missing files because they will be overwritten with new data by the computer or camera. What we can offer: We offer a full suite of data recovery solutions, including a clean-room and specialized data-recovery hardware and software. We offer you a quote up front, and if we don't recover your files, then there's no charge for the data recovery. (Note that on-site visits will still be charged our hourly rates.) Even if your hard drive is not recognized by the BIOS, or is recognized incorrectly, our trained technicians can often recover most of your lost data. We can usually recover deleted or corrupt files, too. And we can often do this on-site, which means lower costs to you. Recovering deleted files off a non-corrupt hard drive would normally start at about $100. If we have to bring your corrupt or failed hard drive back to our lab, then we're talking about a minimum cost of $500. In many cases, we can recover all of your critical files for this cost, but the average cost for recovering data from a failed hard drive is closer to $1000. If further work is required, then, again, we will provide you with a quote up-front, and there is *no charge* if we do not recover the data you require. What *not* to do: The very basics of how a hard drive works: Your hard drive can best be compared to a stack of CDs with lasers in between them. Hard drives actually use magnets instead of lasers, but you get the picture... they're fragile, and can easily be damaged by rough treatment, magnetic fields, electrical failure, moisture, heat, static electricity, or just general wear and tear. (The hard drive is one of the few pieces of equipment in a modern computer that has moving parts.) Some people will suggest putting your hard drive in the freezer. While this may work in some cases, in most cases it will not -- and you may further damage your hard drive by causing "freezer burn" and/or rusting of the components. Other suggestions out there include hitting or dropping your hard drive. We have never heard of a case where this actually worked, and you are quite likely to damage the delicate internal parts of your hard drive -- especially if they are already broken. Re-starting your computer over and over until the BIOS recognizes it. This one does, in fact, work in some cases. But in other cases it will quickly corrupt the data on the drive and make it completely unrecoverable. You are much better off to let our trained technicians take a look at your drive and proceed using our specialized equipment. Privacy Your privacy is assured. We are professional and discreet. Once your data has been successfully returned to you, either on a new hard drive, or on CD or DVD, we clear all record of your files from our systems. Our commitment to your privacy is guaranteed, and access to your data is restricted to only the personnel required for the recovery process. All personnel who have access to your data, in addition to passing criminal records and credit background checks, also have a "SECRET" clearance from the Government of Canada. Questions?
