Our Problem / Solution page
You know when you have a really weird and unusual problem that takes forever to
solve, but eventually, after many hours of research, you find a solution? And then 6 months later, you have the
same problem again. And you KNOW you fixed it before, but you just can't
remember HOW? If so, read on; This is my answer to that. A list of solutions to the
uncommon problems
that I have had, and fixed once, just in case they come up again.
This page is a working document, for my own
reference, that I figured I'd put online so that everyone can use it. Please use these solutions at your own risk!
Solved Problems
- I left an anonymous FTP site open for a couple of days and now I have
several gigs worth of files I can't delete because they are "invalid file
name" and "file not found". My ftp site had been TAGGED.
My (partial)
solution.
- I needed to use wildcard dns settings (ie. *.computerconsulting.ca). This
is (apparently) easy with BIND, but I'm using Windows 2003's DNS server. I
tried various things, but nothing would work.
The Solution.
- Every Single Time I run a scheduled (at boot) SCANDISK (ChkDsk) in
Windows XP Professional, the computer hangs. It re-starts, scans the hard
drive, and locks up. Period. You can re-start, and re-scan, and it still
freezes. You can skip the scan-disk, and it still freezes.
The Solution (Note:
I think this was also fixed in XP SP1 -- I haven't seen it in years)
- SQL Server 2000 Full-Text Indexing (FTI) appears to work correctly, but
nothing is actually in the index. Any search on the index returns 0 results
and FullTextCatalogProperty shows NULL.
The Solution
-
Using VB.NET, I'm trying to databind a ComboBox to a DataView that I
populated using SQL. No matter what I do, it returns the right number of
fields in the ComboBox, but every single one just says "System.Data.DataRowView".
The Solution
As-yet Unsolved Problems
- I purchased LaGarde Software's StoreFront.net and then applied for a
refund because the software didn't meet my needs. I was assured that
the refund would be processed, but it never was. They still owe me
almost $1100.
Here's my blog.
